Eco Tools: Free Calculators for Business and Data Centers

Welcome to Eco Tools, a set of free calculators for people who work in eco business and data centers. Use them to estimate cooling water use, check a facility’s efficiency, size up your electricity emissions and see how fast an efficiency project can pay for itself. Every tool runs in your browser and nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere.

Free eco tools and calculators

Data Center Water Estimator

See roughly how much cooling water a data center uses in a year.

The default of 1.8 liters per kWh is a commonly cited industry average. Use your own site number if you have it. This is an estimate.

PUE Calculator

Power usage effectiveness shows how much extra energy a facility uses beyond its computers. Closer to 1.0 is better.

Electricity Carbon Estimator

Estimate the CO2 from the electricity you use.

0.37 is an approximate US grid average. Your region may be higher or lower, so check your utility or the EPA eGRID data.

Efficiency Savings Calculator

Find out what an energy saving project could be worth each year.

Simple payback only. It does not include financing, maintenance or changing energy prices.

How to use these eco tools

These calculators give quick estimates, not audits. They are meant to help you ask better questions and compare options. For a real project, use your own measured data and talk to a qualified engineer or energy advisor. The default numbers are common planning figures, and you should replace them with your own wherever you can.

Want to learn what the numbers mean? Read our coverage of cooling and water, or read about how companies are cutting their footprint in our Good Companies series. Have a tool you would like us to build? Email info@ecobusinessnews.com, or submit your company if you are doing work worth sharing.

About the numbers

Water usage effectiveness measures liters of water used per kilowatt hour of computing energy. Power usage effectiveness divides total facility power by the power that reaches computers. Grid emission factors vary by region and by hour. These ideas show up in many of our stories, so we built tools that let you try them yourself. Results are estimates, they are provided for information only, and they are not engineering, legal or financial advice.
