When most people picture a luxury cruise, they don’t always imagine sustainability. But times have changed — and so has the cruise industry. This summer, I took a 7-day voyage aboard Celebrity Cruises’ newest and most sustainable ship, the Celebrity Ascent, charting a dream course through Spain, France, and Italy.

And let me tell you — it was a carbon-conscious, solar-charged, zero-waste-adjacent marvel of a vacation.

From sustainable seafood to shore power plug-ins, from LED lighting to liquid IVs and solar phone chargers in our bags — this cruise showed that luxury and environmental mindfulness can sail side by side.

🌍 Setting Sail from Spain — Sustainability in Motion

We began in Barcelona, a city already embracing smart city tech and low-emission tourism zones. Embarkation was seamless thanks to the port’s new electrified terminals. The Celebrity Ascent greeted us not just with champagne, but with a visible commitment to sustainability — recyclable check-in cards, touchless kiosks, and signs promoting water conservation.

Eco Tip: Hydration matters — not just for you, but the planet. Skip single-use plastics and pack these Liquid I.V. Hydration Packets. One pouch, one reusable bottle, all-day hydration.

🚢 The Green Tech Behind Celebrity Ascent

Celebrity Ascent is part of Celebrity’s Edge Series, and it’s arguably their most eco-forward ship to date. Here’s how they’re changing the cruise game:

  • Advanced Waste Management: Onboard systems convert food waste into energy or reduce it to compost.
  • Energy Efficiency: LED lighting, optimized HVAC, and solar panels reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
  • Water Recycling: Greywater systems clean and reuse onboard water — helping preserve marine ecosystems.
  • Shore Power Ready: At eco-friendly ports like La Spezia and Civitavecchia, the Ascent plugs in instead of running engines.
  • Sustainable Cuisine: Menus feature responsibly sourced seafood and plant-forward options.

It’s not perfect — cruising inherently carries emissions — but the trajectory is right.

Tech Must-Have: I packed this Solar Power Bank with Built-In Cables. No need for outlets. Charges your phone with sunshine. Yes, seriously.

🌞 Solar-Fueled Days & Mediterranean Magic

Each port brought beauty — and an opportunity to tread lightly.

🇫🇷 Cannes: Footprints in the Sand

We walked instead of taxiing, dined at a local café that serves organic Provençal dishes, and strolled to the beach with a bamboo tote and reusable cutlery.

Saw a stylish woman in high heels ride off on an electric scooter — Cannes knows how to mix glamour with sustainability.

🇮🇹 Portofino: Natural Splendor Preserved

Here, we swam in a Roman cove with waters so clear, it’s no wonder local ordinances ban large motorboats. The harbor uses mooring buoys to protect the seabed, and signage promotes eco-swimming practices.

We wore reef-safe sunscreen and packed out what we packed in.

🚴 La Spezia: Pedal Power & Pastries

Biking is encouraged — the city has rental kiosks everywhere. No Uber needed. Our route took us past bakeries, zero-waste shops, and tree-lined alleys cooled by sea breezes.

Eco Outfit Tip: Travel-ready, breathable gear like this Valanch Polo Shirt or these Coofandy shirts + shorts make it easy to stay light, cool, and washable without synthetic gunk.

🇮🇹 Rome & Naples — Ancient Cities, Modern Eco-Choices

🏛️ Rome

We joined a group walking tour (less fuel, more fun) to the Colosseum, Pantheon, and Spanish Steps. Our guide handed out recycled paper maps and encouraged us to fill water bottles at the city’s public fountains.

🌋 Naples & Pompeii

We were floored by Pompeii — a buried city preserved in time. But even more impressive? Celebrity offered eco-conscious shore excursions with smaller groups, electric buses, and zero single-use plastics.

Grabbed a sfogliatella pastry in biodegradable wrapping. Big win.

🌊 At Sea: Entertainment Meets Eco-Effort

On our day at sea, the Ascent shined even brighter. Think:

  • Digital menus instead of paper
  • Motion-sensor lighting in restrooms
  • Organic wines at Eden Bar
  • Sustainability seminars hosted by the crew

We danced under stars powered by solar-assisted deck lighting. That’s the kind of clean energy we love.

Travel Tech Favorite: The Samsonite Omni 2 Spinner Set — durable, expandable, and easy to maneuver on cobblestones, cruise decks, or train stations.

📦 Positive Phil’s Eco Essentials — Cruise Edition

Travel EssentialWhy It’s Eco-Awesome
Liquid I.V. Hydration PacketsReplaces 3 water bottles/day with 1 packet + reusable bottle
Valanch Polo ShirtLightweight, moisture-wicking, lasts all trip without washes
Coofandy Shirts + ShortsEasy to pack, wear, dry — less laundry = less water use
Samsonite Spinner LuggageBuilt to last, cutting down on fast fashion travel gear
Solar Power BankSunshine-powered phone backup — never plug into coal again

💬 Final Thought: Travel Light, Travel Right

This trip showed me that sustainable luxury is possible. You don’t have to give up style, comfort, or experience. Just be mindful. Pack smarter. Choose better tours. Support companies like Celebrity that are trying to innovate.

So yes — cruise with conscience. Dance under solar-powered lights. Wear breathable bamboo shirts. Hike Roman ruins with a solar charger in your bag.

Because the world is worth seeing — and it’s worth protecting, too.
