CarbonCure concrete is one of the clearest examples of climate technology working inside an industry most people never think about. The Halifax, Nova Scotia company built a system that puts captured carbon dioxide into fresh concrete, where it turns into a mineral and stays there for good.
How CarbonCure concrete works
The process happens while the concrete is being mixed. CarbonCure injects captured CO2 into the batch, and the gas reacts with the cement and mineralizes. That locks the carbon away permanently. The added strength also lets producers use less cement while keeping the concrete just as strong. Cement is the most carbon heavy ingredient in concrete, so using less of it cuts emissions at the source.
The numbers so far
In October 2024 the company announced it had saved about 500,000 metric tons of CO2 across roughly 7.5 million truckloads of concrete. It reports supplying more than 60 million cubic yards of lower carbon concrete, with hundreds of systems running in more than two dozen countries. Producers named by the company include Thomas Concrete in Georgia, Brannan Materials in Colorado, Ozinga in Illinois, Pan-United in Singapore, PREMIX in Paraguay and Kilsaran in Ireland. These figures come from the company, so treat them as company reported.
Why this matters for business
Concrete is everywhere. Offices, warehouses, bridges and large data center campuses all use it in huge amounts. Owners and developers are now asking for lower carbon materials, and a supplier who can offer them without raising the risk on the job has an edge. This approach is attractive because it fits into the way concrete plants already work. It does not ask the builder to change the design or the schedule.
What to watch next
The big question for any climate technology is scale. Half a million tons is meaningful, but the building industry is enormous. Independent checking of the savings and wider use by large owners will tell us how far this can go. For now it is a strong example of a practical idea from Canada being used on projects across North America and beyond.
