Closed Loop Partners circular economy work is a useful look at how money and ideas move together. The New York firm, founded in 2014, says the companies it backs have kept more than 5 billion dollars of materials and products in circulation.
What Closed Loop Partners circular reports
In its 2024 impact report, the firm says it has made more than 90 investments, kept about 7 million tons of materials in circulation and avoided 25 million metric tons of greenhouse gas, with 575 million dollars in assets under management. It says the investments span five continents, 10 countries and 29 US states. These are company reported figures. This is an investment firm, and nothing here is investing advice.
Three parts of the model
The firm has three units: Closed Loop Capital Management, the Center for the Circular Economy and Closed Loop Builders. CEO Ron Gonen leads it. One Closed Loop Builders company, Circular Services, runs 27 facilities and has processed 3 billion pounds of material.

Beyond the Bag
In July 2020 the Consortium to Reinvent the Retail Bag launched the Beyond the Bag initiative with founding partners CVS Health, Target and Walmart, who committed 15 million dollars. The challenge received over 450 ideas and shortlisted 58. Winners announced in February 2021 shared about 1 million dollars in prizes, including ChicoBag, Domtar, Fill it Forward, GOATOTE and Returnity.
Why it matters
Circular business models need both capital and the big retailers that can test them. Pilots such as the Petaluma Reusable Cup Project, involving Starbucks, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo among others, show how reuse can be tried in real stores. Results from these pilots are worth watching.
