Reading Time: 4 mins read

LED vs incandescent is not a close contest. The US Department of Energy says residential LEDs, especially Energy Star rated ones, use at least 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs.

Energy

Using at least 75 percent less energy means a much smaller share of your power bill goes to lighting.

Lifespan

LEDs can last up to 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs, the Department of Energy says.

A good quality LED can also last 3 to 5 times longer than a compact fluorescent bulb.

Choosing a bulb

Look for the Energy Star label and check the brightness in lumens, not watts, when you compare.

The fine print

Lifespan depends on use and heat. Cheap, poor quality LEDs may not last as long as the best ones.

Why it matters

Lighting is one of the simplest upgrades a home or business can make, and the savings start the first day.
