Equinix renewable energy coverage held at 96 percent in 2025, the eighth year in a row above 90 percent. The data center operator is also testing liquid cooling and sending server heat to nearby buildings.
Equinix renewable energy by the numbers
The company reports 96 percent renewable coverage across its retail sites, an average power usage effectiveness of 1.37, a 5.3 percent improvement, and 36 million dollars invested in efficiency. It has science based targets approved and a goal of net zero by 2040. These are company reported figures from its sustainability page, last updated in April 2026.
Cooling and heat reuse
In 2024 Equinix piloted coolant distribution units at its Co-Innovation Facility in Ashburn, Virginia, which keep facility water separate from technical fluids. That is a pilot, not a full rollout. It also expanded heat export to a site in Paris and two in Helsinki. Heat from the Paris site warmed the training pool used at the 2024 Olympics. Company figures say heat export rose 245 percent and returned 14.5 gigawatt hours to communities.

Green financing
Equinix issued about 2 billion dollars of green bonds in 2024 and about 7.3 billion dollars in total through March 2025, according to its blog. It also reports 370 megawatts of new power purchase agreements in 2024, including its first in Asia-Pacific.
Read the metric carefully
Renewable coverage is Equinix’s own measure. It does not by itself prove that clean power ran each server each hour, and readers should look at how certificates and purchase agreements are counted. Even so, the heat reuse projects and water reporting for customers show an operator moving beyond a single headline number.
