Iron Mountain renewable data centers are moving past yearly clean energy purchases toward hourly matching. The company reports hourly carbon-free matching at 16 sites covering 75 percent of customer power.
Iron Mountain renewable data centers today
The company runs more than 30 data centers in seven countries and 21 markets, with 1.4 gigawatts of existing and pipeline capacity, according to a July 2026 report from Resource Recycling. It says it has certified 100 percent of annual electricity purchases as renewable every year since 2017, and aims for full hourly coverage by 2040.
Solar and efficiency
The Edison, New Jersey site has a 7.2 megawatt rooftop array with more than 18,000 panels, which the company says is the largest rooftop solar of any North American data center. It doubled its solar program in the Netherlands in 2025. Its 2025 water usage effectiveness improved to 0.82 from 0.996, while power usage effectiveness stayed flat at 1.41. These are company reported.

Goals
Iron Mountain has set goals of net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 and net zero Scope 3 by 2040. It joined the RE100 clean power group in 2018, and its UK, Ireland, Netherlands and Belgium operations reached 100 percent renewable electricity that year.
Caveats
The 100 percent claim rests on annual purchases, not hourly matching, and hourly matching covers only part of the load. Reports also differ on Scope 1 and 2 emissions: the company report shows a drop from 2024 to 2025, while another report notes a rise from 2022, so readers should look at the date used.
