Data center construction is a multi year process that turns land and a power connection into a secure building full of computing equipment. Each step has its own risks and timeline.

Step one: site and power
Everything starts with finding land, water access and a reliable power supply. Because grid connections can take years, power often decides where a project can go.
Step two: design
Engineers decide the size, the cooling approach and the level of redundancy. Many owners aim for a tier level, a rating of how resilient the site is. The Uptime Institute explains these tiers.
Step three: building
Crews pour foundations, erect the shell and install the electrical and mechanical systems, including chillers, pumps, piping and valves. Equipment lead times can shape the schedule.
Step four: commissioning
Before any customer equipment arrives, the whole system is tested under load. Testing finds problems while they are cheap to fix.
