The data center industry is growing fast.

However, it is also running into a hard limit: power.

At Data Center World 2026, held April 20–23 in Washington, D.C., industry leaders are coming together to tackle this exact issue. The event takes place at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and brings together operators, developers, and energy providers from across the ecosystem.

Right now, demand is not the problem.

Instead, the real challenge is how to power the next wave of growth.

Power Is Now the Main Constraint

In the past, companies focused on scale and performance. Today, they focus on energy.

Across the industry, several issues keep coming up. For example:

  • Grid congestion is slowing new projects
  • Interconnection timelines are getting longer
  • Energy costs are rising
  • Sustainability pressure is increasing

As a result, developers must rethink how they plan and build data centers.

In other words, energy is no longer a background detail. It now drives decision-making.

Why Data Center World Matters Right Now

Many industry events talk about trends. However, Data Center World focuses on real problems.

This year, the agenda highlights:

  • Power infrastructure and energy strategy
  • Renewable and sustainable integration
  • AI-driven demand and efficiency
  • Data center design and operations

Because of this focus, the event reflects what is actually happening on the ground.

It also brings together the people responsible for solving these challenges—not just talking about them.

A Strong Lineup of Industry Leaders

The speaker lineup includes leaders from across the data center and energy ecosystem.

For example, featured speakers come from:

  • NVIDIA
  • Oracle Cloud Infrastructure
  • Google Datacenters
  • Vertiv
  • Schneider Electric
  • Aligned Data Centers

These companies operate at scale. More importantly, they are dealing with real constraints in real time.

As a result, their insights carry weight.

How the Industry Is Adapting

So, how are companies responding?

Several strategies are gaining traction.

First, many developers are investing in onsite and behind-the-meter power. This approach reduces reliance on the grid.

Next, others are using hybrid energy models. These combine traditional and renewable sources.

At the same time, some companies are exploring new geographic regions with better energy availability.

Finally, improvements in efficiency—both hardware and software—continue to play a key role.

Together, these changes show a shift toward more integrated planning.

A Defining Moment for Data Centers

The industry now faces a clear turning point.

On one hand, demand continues to grow at a rapid pace. On the other hand, infrastructure cannot keep up without changes.

Because of this gap, energy strategy will define the next phase of growth.

Companies that solve the power challenge will move faster. Meanwhile, others may face delays or higher costs.

Looking Ahead

As Data Center World 2026 unfolds, one thing is clear:

The future of data centers depends on energy.

Technology still matters. However, without power, nothing gets built.

For that reason, events like this are more than conferences. They are working sessions for the industry’s biggest problem.
