The data center industry has a new problem, and it is not chips. It is electricity. Gartner projects data center electricity consumption will grow 26 percent in 2026 alone, and Goldman Sachs expects US data center power demand to double by 2027. The infrastructure that runs the AI boom is now colliding with a power grid that was not built for this.

An Aging Grid Meets a New Kind of Demand

About 70 percent of the US power grid was built between the 1950s and the 1970s. It is nearing the end of its working life at the exact moment AI workloads are pulling electricity faster than that grid can deliver it. Data centers are no longer just customers drawing power. They are becoming active participants in how the grid itself gets planned, financed, and upgraded.

Closing the Gap

Operators are not waiting on utilities alone. The response includes natural gas turbines paired with carbon capture, HVO-fueled generators, wind, solar, geothermal, and battery storage, often stacked together on a single site. Renewables currently supply about 27 percent of data center electricity worldwide, and that renewable capacity is projected to grow 22 percent a year through 2030, enough to cover close to half of the data center industry’s added demand over that stretch.

Some operators are co-investing directly in grid upgrades. Others are building in load flexibility, agreeing to shed or curtail demand at peak hours in exchange for faster interconnection. On-site generation and storage are shifting from backup systems to core infrastructure.

A New Way to Keep Score

The industry is also changing how it measures success. Instead of just tracking energy consumed, more operators are watching “tokens per watt per dollar,” a measure of how much useful AI output comes out of every unit of power spent. That shift reframes the power conversation from a cost problem into a competitiveness problem, and it rewards the operators and suppliers who can prove real efficiency, not just raw capacity.

Why This Matters Beyond the Data Center

Power is now the gating factor for how fast AI infrastructure can be built, which makes it the gating factor for who wins the spec, who gets the interconnection queue slot, and who gets named on an owner’s approved manufacturer list. Expect this exact conversation, the 70-gigawatt gap and what closes it, to dominate the mainstage when the industry gathers in Las Vegas this month.
