Welcome to EcoBusinessNews, where we spotlight the companies shaping a cleaner, smarter, and more connected future. Today, we turn our focus to Cologix, a North American leader in hyperscale edge colocation and interconnection services. While the global digital economy surges ahead—powered by AI, cloud computing, and real-time data—Cologix is ensuring this growth doesn’t come at the planet’s expense.

A Strategic Footprint for a Connected Future

Founded in 2010, Cologix operates more than 40 data centers across 12 key markets in the U.S. and Canada. These facilities are not only geographically strategic, but environmentally intelligent.

In Canada, Cologix manages over 1 million square feet of data center space and 94 MW of power capacity, with a strong presence in Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver. These locations offer a natural edge in sustainability—benefiting from hydroelectric energy and colder climates that reduce cooling loads.

In the U.S., hubs like Dallas, Silicon Valley, Columbus, and Northern New Jersey place Cologix at the intersection of dense fiber routes, cloud availability zones, and enterprise clusters—critical for high-density, latency-sensitive workloads.

This footprint places Cologix in a prime position to serve growing enterprise, cloud, and hyperscale demand, especially for clients with high ESG standards.

Hyperscale-Ready, Edge-Optimized

Cologix is increasingly positioning its newest facilities as hyperscale edge-ready—combining dense interconnection, renewable energy, and modular scalability.

  • MTL8 (Montreal): A state-of-the-art, purpose-built hyperscale facility offering 15 MW of capacity and direct fiber connectivity to MTL3, a major carrier hotel.
  • SV1 (Silicon Valley): Adjacent to hyperscaler campuses, this facility provides direct cloud onramps and Tier III+ power redundancy.

Through its Cloud Connect platform, Cologix enables direct access to AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle—empowering hybrid and multicloud strategies with low latency and high resilience.

Carrier-Neutral Connectivity at Scale

Unlike vertically integrated hyperscalers, Cologix maintains a carrier-neutral, network-dense model. With more than 600 network providers accessible through its Meet-Me Rooms in major markets, Cologix enables:

  • Redundant ISP connections
  • Disaster recovery and multi-site failover
  • Optimized performance for AI, fintech, and latency-sensitive applications

In Montreal, customers benefit from proximity to QIX, Canada’s second-largest IXP, enhancing global connectivity with local efficiency.

Powering Data Growth with Green Energy

Sustainability is core to Cologix’s infrastructure—from energy sourcing to operational design.

Renewable Energy Sourcing

  • 95%+ renewable energy use in Canadian markets, largely hydroelectric
  • Near-zero Scope 2 emissions at Montreal and Vancouver sites

Energy-Efficient Engineering

  • Free-air cooling leverages northern climates
  • Hot/cold aisle containment improves airflow and efficiency
  • VFDs on mechanical systems reduce energy consumption under partial loads
  • Real-time PUE monitoring ensures ongoing optimization
  • LEED certifications across multiple sites

Privately Held, Financially Backed, ESG-Focused

Backed by substantial private capital, Cologix is scaling with purpose:

  • $1.5 billion in financing secured in late 2024
  • Includes $1 billion credit facility and $500 million equity investment
  • Supported by investors like Mubadala Investment Company and Stonepeak

Being privately held gives Cologix the agility to prioritize long-term sustainability without the quarterly pressures of public markets.

Leadership Driving ESG Excellence

Cologix’s executive team brings both vision and operational discipline:

  • Laura Ortman (CEO) – Championing diversity, ESG transparency, and long-term growth
  • Chris Heinrich (COO) – Driving data center performance and efficiency
  • Nathan Hazelwood (CFO) – Overseeing sustainable financial growth
  • Sean Maskell (President, Canada) – Integrating clean energy into facility operations

Under their leadership, Cologix advances sustainability not just in infrastructure, but across hiring, vendor diversity, and community engagement.

Conclusion: A Blueprint for Greener Digital Infrastructure

Cologix may not always be the loudest voice in the data center space, but it’s one of the most grounded—combining technical performance, environmental leadership, and strategic growth.

As demand for AI-ready infrastructure and carbon-conscious solutions accelerates, Cologix stands ready: enabling digital transformation while building a low-emission future.

For enterprise clients, energy partners, and tech-forward organizations seeking scalable colocation and interconnection with a light environmental footprint, Cologix is a name to know.
